DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines’ bus service will eliminate some left turns to avoid hitting pedestrians.

The decision comes after a city bus hit a pedestrian in downtown Des Moines on Monday. The man said he injured his wrist and his knees were swollen after the accident.

It the was the fifth-time a pedestrian has been hit by a city bus at a downtown intersection in the past 15 months. In each case the bus was turning left.

Officials with the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority say they will review all bus routes and eliminate as many left-hand turns as possible.

A study by the Transit Cooperative Research Program indicates that 69 percent of bus-pedestrian accidents involved a bus that was turning left.
