URBANDALE (AP) — A Washington man was killed and his son seriously injured when the pickup truck they were in was struck by wheels that had come off a semitrailer on Interstate 80.

The Urbandale Police Department says that the semi was driving eastbound Saturday afternoon when the rear wheels of its trailer came free and catapulted over a barricade that separated eastbound and westbound traffic.

One of the wheels struck a pickup truck driven by 61-year-old Gerald Statler. His son, 31-year-old Brandon Statler, was a passenger in the truck.

Gerald Statler was pronounced dead at the scene. Brandon Statler was treated at a Des Moines hospital for serious injuries.

The semi continued for about a half mile before the driver pulled it off the highway.

Police say the driver of the semi, James Faust of Arizona, wasn’t hurt.
