Wrestlers roll over Pac-10 foes

The ISU wrestling team excelled in its final two non-conference tests of the season, shutting out Oregon State in Hilton Coliseum on Friday before winning nine of 10 in Tempe, Ariz. against Arizona State on Sunday afternoon.

The eighth-ranked Cyclones (14-4, 1-1 Big 12) gave up only two takedowns over the weekend.

Iowa State racked up 32 takedowns and made quick work of the defending Pac10 champion Beavers (9-8) Friday in a 40-0 win, then scored 35 takedowns against the Sun Devils (9-7) in a 33-3 victory.

David Bertolino (197), ranked 19th, pinned OSU junior Kyle Bressler in 2:19 on Friday. The pin was the senior’s first in Hilton, but Bertolino said he wished he could have gotten a better workout.

“I felt so good that I almost let him up so I could go the whole seven minutes,” he said Friday night. “I wanted to get some more takedowns, but I thought I’d secure a pin.”

Sixth-ranked junior Cyler Sanderson (157) also recorded a first-period fall, pinning OSU sophomore Dan Brascetta in 1:48.

Seventh-ranked sophomore Nick Fanthorpe (133) scored 11 takedowns en route to a technical fall victory against Beaver Clifton Ivanoff.

The Cyclones kept the momentum rolling into Sunday. True freshman Tyler Clark (125) will likely continue to move up in the rankings after a 9-2 decision victory over 14th-ranked Sun Devil freshman Anthony Robles.

Clark (16-7), currently ranked 17th, scored two takedowns in both the first and third periods. Top-ranked sophomore Jake Varner (184) moved his undefeated record to 21-0 with a 5-2 win over 15th-ranked freshman Brent Chriswell.

Sixth-ranked freshman Jon Reader (165) suffered the Cyclones’ lone loss of the weekend, dropping a 4-3 decision to unranked Sun Devil senior Pat Pitsch, a two-time Pac-10 champion.

The Cyclones will back in action on Sunday in Hilton against No. 12 Missouri.
