Wesley Johnson is healthy, and he has the hardware to prove it.

The sophomore was named the Big 12 Player of the Week after a pair of 20-point game performances.

“It means a lot to me with all the talent we have [in the Big 12],” Johnson said.

It was Johnson who was the most talented of them all last week. The 6-foot-7-inch guard had his first double-double of the seTason on Jan. 16 against Missouri when he put up 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. He followed that up with a career-high 24-point performance against Oklahoma State on Saturday.

“That’s a tremendous honor simply because of the great players that are in this league and the great teams; and for him to be singled out for his play is a credit to Wes,” said coach Greg McDermott.

During the two-game span, Johnson averaged 22.0 points and 7.5 rebounds. Johnson earned player-of-the-week honors once last season and also received rookie-of-the-week honors. He’s spent most of this season recovering from an injured ankle that forced him out of action for over three weeks.

“This lets [the competition] know I’m not hurt anymore,” Johnson said. “Let them know I’m back. It’s basically a statement that I’m back now – I’m ready to play.”
