Curran to continue to wrestle this season

Wrestling coach Cael Sanderson said 197-pound redshirt sophomore Joe Curran will be able to compete this season.

Curran was taken out of the Lied Recreation Athletic Center on a stretcher Saturday after his heart rate accelerated too high.

Sanderson wouldn’t release the exact details of Curran’s health situation, but said the problem is linked to his metabolism.

“He is fine, though,” Sanderson said. “It’s something that was nice to know, and it is something that we can deal with. It was kind of a scary deal, but it turns out with the right type of approach to it, he’ll be fine and actually be better and stronger than ever, really.”

Curran’s heart rate was brought down and he was released from Mary Greeley Medical Center.

“We’re just keeping that under control,” Sanderson said. “We’re going to bring him back real slow. I think he’s going to go to a specialist. It’s more we just need to be cautious of what he’s doing.”

Curran was in competition for the 197-pound starting spot for the Cyclones going into the tournament. He started as a true freshman in 2005, finishing with an 11-18 record, and redshirted last season.
