The second-ranked ISU wrestling team won 34 of 39 matches over the weekend, claiming four decisive dual victories on a road trip to the upper northeast.

The Cyclones (5-0 overall) beat Rider, 34-0, in Lawrenceville, N.J., on Friday before topping Clarion (40-0), Binghamton (30-15) and West Virginia (24-9) on Sunday in Binghamton, New York.

Freshmen Mark Kist (125) and Jon Reader (165), and sophomores Nick Fanthorpe (133) and David Zabriskie (HWT) went 4-0 on the weekend.

Mitch Mueller (141) went 3-1 against elite competition, beating fourth-ranked Don Fisch of Rider, 3-2. Mueller dislocated his right elbow in a match against Fisch in February.

On Sunday, he beat West Virginia’s 16th ranked junior David Jauregui, 7-4, but lost to 19th ranked Binghamton senior Kyle Fried, 6-4 in sudden victory.

Iowa State gave up only two takedowns in 10 matches against Clarion. No. 1 ranked sophomore Jake Varner (184) missed Sunday’s duals to travel to the NWCA All-Star Meet in Oregon, but wrestled on Friday, beating 13th ranked Doug Umbehauer, 8-4.

Sophomore Chris Pursel (174) moved up a weight to fill in for Varner, winning two matches before a late rally fell short in an 10-8 loss to West Virginia 15th ranked Kurt Brenner, who is also usually a 174-pounder.

Senior David Bertolino (ISU) upset 16th ranked T.J. Morrison of Rider, 5-4.

Sophomore Cyler Sanderson (157) edged 15th ranked West Virginia senior Zac Fryling, 3-2.

The Cyclones next wrestle on Dec. 2 at No. 1 ranked Minnesota.
