Huskers dominate Cyclones in rematch

The ISU volleyball team drew a record number of fans for their match with Nebraska on Sunday, but the crowd was silenced early and often.

Nebraska, who is now tied for first in the Big 12 with Texas at 15-1, exhibited their power in all facets of the game in a dominant three-game sweep (30-20, 30-19, 30-16) of the Cyclones in front of a crowd of 6,705 at Hilton Coliseum, which is the largest crowd to ever view a match in the state of Iowa.

Nebraska, who usually relies on their offense, struggled hitting early but was able to ride its defense until the National Player of the Year Sarah Pavan was able to get it going. Nebraska ended up hitting .389, while holding the Cyclones to a .135 hitting percentage and leading every statistical category.

The second-ranked Huskers proved their ranking in game one going on a 7-0 run early with Jordan Larson at the service line and taking advantage of Iowa State’s struggles offensively to open the match with a 30-20 victory. The Cyclones only hit .171 compared to .282 for the Huskers and compounded that with four service errors.

Nebraska continued to impress in game two, using their outstanding serving and court coverage to shut down the Cyclone hitting attack once again and take game two, 30-19. Through two games, the Cornhuskers held the Iowa State’s two leading hitters, Erin Boeve and Lauren Cummings, to a combined seven kills and .000 hitting percentage.

The Cornhuskers jumped out to another early lead in game three and left no doubt as to who the more dominant team was, finishing off the Cyclones with a 30-16 victory.

Victoria Henson was the only Iowa State hitter in double-digit kills with 11. Pavan led the Huskers with 15 kills.
