After a few close calls in the late stages of overtime, the ISU women’s soccer team made another statement Friday night as they recorded a 1-1 tie in double overtime against the No. 2 ranked Texas Longhorns at the ISU Soccer Complex.

“I think it’s a huge statement to let everyone know that we are working hard and we’re here,” said Elise Reid, a sophomore midfielder who netted the Cyclones’ lone goal in the 22nd minute.

Reid took a pass from midfielder Brittanie Waddell, dribbled across the penalty box and was able to finish on a shot that was just out of the reach of Texas keeper Dianna Pfenninger.

“It’s very exciting,” added goalkeeper Ann Gleason, who recorded seven saves for the Cyclones. “We definitely think that we could have done better, but in hindsight we still tied a nationally, top-five ranked team, which is a very good feat in itself.”

Following Reid’s goal, the Cyclones (6-1-3) lacked good scoring chances late in the game against a strong Texas defense, while the Longhorns (8-1-2) were able to record 20 total shots to Iowa State’s five.

One of those Texas shots resulted in their only goal, when in the 32nd minute, Longhorn midfielder Courtney Gaines took a corner that bent just inside the far post to even the score.

Though Coach Rebecca Hornbacher was pleased with the effort, she said the lack of scoring opportunities can be attributed to her team not pulling the trigger on a few shot opportunities.

“I think that we had a great solid effort. Texas is a very good team,” she said. “I think we did a good job when we possessed the ball to create some dangerous opportunities, we just need to shoot the ball more.”

For Cyclone defender and Texas native Amanda Purple, the game took on a special meaning.

“It’s always a great experience to play against the Texas team. I know some of the players, and Texas soccer is just really competitive,” the junior from Plano, Texas said. “It’s a really good opportunity to play against them-they give a great game.”

Next up for Iowa State is a trip to Boulder, Colo., to take on the Buffaloes (5-3-3) at 2 p.m. Sunday.
