After an impressive 1-1, double-overtime draw against the No. 2 Texas Longhorns at the ISU Soccer Complex on Friday night, the ISU soccer team suffered its first conference loss of the season Sunday, falling 1-0 at Colorado (6-3-3, 2-1-0 Big 12) and splitting its weekend schedule.

Although the team’s undefeated conference record was snapped, midfielder Elise Reid said the result against the No. 2 team in the country on Friday was very encouraging.

“I think it’s a huge statement to let everyone know that we are working hard and we’re here,” said Reid, who netted the Cyclones’ lone goal in the 22nd minute.

Reid took a pass from midfielder Brittanie Waddell, dribbled across the penalty box and was able to finish on a shot that was just out of the reach of Texas goalkeeper Dianna Pfenninger.

“It’s very exciting,” added goalkeeper Ann Gleason, who recorded seven saves for the Cyclones in the draw. “We definitely think that we could have done better, but in hindsight, we still tied a nationally top-five-ranked team, which is a very good feat in itself.”

Following Reid’s goal, the Cyclones (6-2-3, 2-1-1 Big 12) lacked good scoring chances late in the game against a strong Texas defense, while the Longhorns (9-1-2, 2-0-1 Big 12) were able to record 20 total shots to Iowa State’s five. Iowa State was also outshot on Sunday against Colorado by a count of 12-3.

One of Texas’ many shots resulted in its only goal, when in the 32nd minute Longhorn midfielder Courtney Gaines took a corner that bent just inside the far post to even the score. The only tally in Sunday’s game came from Buffaloes forward Nikki Marshall, who broke through in the 20th minute against Gleason.

Although coach Rebecca Hornbacher was pleased with the effort, she said the lack of scoring opportunities against Texas can be attributed to her team not pulling the trigger on a few shot opportunities.

“I think that we had a great solid effort. Texas is a very good team,” she said. “I think we did a good job when we possessed the ball to create some dangerous opportunities, we just need to shoot the ball more.”

For Cyclone defender and Texas native Amanda Purple, the game took on a special meaning. Purple is one of seven players on the ISU team who are from the state of Texas.

“It’s always a great experience to play against the Texas team. I know some of the players, and Texas soccer is just really competitive,” said the junior from Plano, Texas. “It’s a really good opportunity to play against them – they give a great game.”

Next up for Iowa State is a trip to Lubbock, Texas, to take on Texas Tech (3-6-1, 1-3-0 Big 12) at 7 p.m. Friday.
