Volleyball team knocks off Iowa, extend Cy-Hawk lead

DES MOINES – The ISU volleyball team sure didn’t need long to beat in-state rival Iowa and grab two points in the Cy-Hawk series.

The Cyclones made short work of the Hawkeyes, getting the sweep 3-0 (30-25, 30-22, 30-23 ) at the Drake Classic in Des Moines Saturday afternoon.

Iowa State was able to take advantage of an inexperienced Iowa squad that played six freshman and no seniors.

“We know how we play with each other,” said sophomore Kaylee Manns. “They are still getting in the sync of things.”

Coming off a tough match last night, coach Christy Johnson was worried if her team would feel the effects playing an early match the next day.

Her fears were quickly put to rest as the Cyclones stormed out of the gate, hitting .465 in game one. Senior Erin Boeve led the way with nine kills.

“I was really happy the way we came out,” Johnson said. “Sometimes after a big win there is a tendency to come out a little tired, a little sluggish. I felt like our kids were ready to go from the first point.”

The Cyclones were in complete control throughout the match, never falling more than three points behind. But despite the margin of victory, Johnson was on edge the whole time.

“It didn’t feel easy today,” Johnson said. “They are a team that can get on a roll and take off.”

A balanced offense kept the Hawkeye defense on its heels as the Iowa State hit .348 for the match.

Five players recorded at least seven kills and no one had a negative hitting percentage. Senior Lauren Cummings paced the Cyclone attack with 14 kills, followed by Boeve with 13.

“It’s nice knowing I can just set anyone and they can get a kill,” Manns said. “It takes a lot of pressure off me.”

The team seems to be getting on a roll and any win is good, but a victory over Iowa has a little something special. It gives the team a chance to extend ISU’s lead to 4-0 in the Cy-Hawk series.

Even for players from others states it is an exciting time.

“I’m not even from Iowa and it’s a huge deal,” said Manns, a native of Kansas. “Beating Iowa is awesome.”
