Volleyball loses second straight to open season

The ISU volleyball team failed to take advantage of a great opportunity, dropping its second match of the season, 3-1 (30-24, 27-30, 30-18, 30-21), to Creighton in front of 679 fans Tuesday night at Hilton Coliseum.

The Bluejays star player, Kelly Goc, left with an ankle injury with Creighton (3-1) trailing 14-15, but in the end, it didn’t matter. The Cyclones (0-2) struggled with consistency all night, hitting just .098 for the match.

The Cyclones dropped an error-ridden game one, 30-24, despite Creighton being without its star Kelly Goc after she went down with an ankle injury at the halfway point. Erin Boeve led Iowa State with four kills, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the team’s seven service errors.

Game two saw Iowa State clean up its act, tallying only two service errors en route to a 30-27 win. With Creighton yielding few easy kills, the defense needed to step up, and it did, with Boeve recording seven of the teams 17 digs.

The Bluejays used a 12-0 run to build a commanding lead and take game three, 30-18. The wheels completely fell off for the Cyclones, who struggled mightily with their passing, and registered just eight kills, hitting .160 percent.

Iowa State once again kept the game close before fading down the stretch in game four, 21-30. Creighton’s defense was all over the court keeping balls alive, and the Cyclones couldn’t find the kills needed to stay in the game.

Erin Boeve recorded her first double-double of the season with 14 kills and 11 blocks and libero Laura Cady added 15 digs for the Cyclones. Creighton was paced by Lauren Bloemke’s 18 kills, with Jessica Houts and Allie Oelke chipping in 14 and 13, respectively.

Game notes:

Creighton’s preseason All-MVC middle blocker Kelly Goc injured her ankle at 15-14 in the first game and never returned. Iowa State used two defensive specialists – Ashley Mass and Amy Vos – instead of having its outsides and right side pass.
