Volleyball Update: Outside hitter gains familiarity in new position

An old adage states that the biggest improvement occurs from match one to match two.

For ISU senior outside hitter Erin Boeve, who is in the midst of a switch from middle blocker, that was true in almost every category in the Cyclones’ loss to the Creighton Bluejays on Tuesday.

Boeve improved her hitting percentage by more than 100 points and had five more kills than during Iowa State’s loss to Middle Tennessee State on Sunday.

Coach Christy Johnson said the coaches have been working on having Boeve hit some different shots than she has in the past.

“She’s still not there yet, but I think she did a much better job tonight of hitting off the outside blocker’s hands,” Johnson said. “You look for improvement, and I thought she did a better job offensively tonight.”

As Boeve’s play improved, Iowa State’s did as well. Even though the Cyclones have lost both of their matches 3-1, all four of the games against the Bluejays featured at least two lead changes and six ties.

Boeve said she is getting more comfortable with each game at her new position.

“A big thing is timing. In the middle, everything is so quick and you’re kind of just up there, where as the outside, you have to wait for the ball a little bit longer,” Boeve said.
