SOFTBALL: Iowa State snap losing skid

The ISU softball team snapped out of its current funk for one game this weekend at the Marriott Houston Hobby Invitational, but its struggles at the plate did them in on Sunday.

Angel Shamblin, junior pitcher from the University of Houston, no-hit the Cyclones (3-12) and struck out 14 batters leading the Cougars to a 4-0 victory. Freshman Charissa Carlin (1-3) took the loss for the Cyclones.

It was the second loss to Houston for Iowa State over the weekend, as the Cyclones also dropped a 2-1 decision to the Cougars on Saturday. Iowa State broke up a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the sixth on a hard hit RBI single by freshman Alex Johnson, but could not hold off the hard-charging Cougars in the bottom of the inning. The Cyclones threatened in the seventh but could not bring a run across. Senior Katie Reichling (0-2) was the hard luck loser.

Before the two losses to the host Cougars, the Cyclones snapped a seven-game losing streak by defeating McNeese State 6-2. Senior catcher Ashley Killeen snapped out of her early season slump, going 2 for 3 with a home run. Carlin pitched the first four innings for her first career victory and Reichling finished the game for her first career save.

On Friday, the Cyclones dropped decisions to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and New Mexico State, 6-2 and 4-0, respectively. Reichling took the loss against TAMU-CC, but Iowa State did get a first career home run from Johnson.

Against New Mexico State, the Cyclones did generate some offense, including a two-hit performance from junior right fielder Kristy Olsen, but could not plate any runs. Junior Amie Ford (1-3) allowed three runs in the third inning, which contributed to her taking the loss.
