The ISU swimming and diving team were beaten by a better team in 24th-ranked Missouri on Saturday, but they didn’t go down without a fight.

The Cyclones (5-2 overall) fell to the Tigers (7-1) 184-103, in Columbia, Mo., winning five events and coming close to winning a couple others. Senior Lauren Breunig collected three of the five victories, winning the 100- and 200-meter freestyle events and the 200 individual medley.

“Lauren, obviously with winning three races, was just very solid,” head coach Duane Sorenson said. “We [were] very impressed with Frances Calzada’s performance, with her swimming season bests in the 50 free, the 100 free and the 200 free.”

Sophomore Haley Haynes won the one-meter diving competition with a season-best performance. Iowa State’s other win came in the final event of the meet the 400 freestyle relay.

Diving coach Jeff Warrick said he was pleased with the performance of the divers but that there is still much room for improvement in the coming weeks.

“I thought that everyone looked pretty sharp,” Warrick said. “Haley’s one-meter was just fantastic; it was her best of the season and one of the best of her career.”

One of the close defeats the Tigers handed to the Cyclones was in the 1000 freestyle, where Missouri’s Carly Sullivan touched out ISU senior Chelsey Walden by 11-hundredths of a second.

Sorenson said Walden was very excited about the performance even with the close loss, as she swam a lifetime best in that event.

Calzada finished third in the 50 freestyle but was only five-hundredths of a second out of second place and just over a tenth of second from winning the race.

Iowa State will finish out the home portion of its schedule at 1 p.m. Saturday against Nebraska. The Cornhuskers tied the Cyclones for fifth at the Big 12 Relays to open the season.
