Swimmers hope to bounce back

Saturday, the ISU swimming and diving team has a chance to see how much it’s grown.

The team, which has lost consecutive meets to Missouri and Iowa, will take on the team that it tied for fifth at the season-opening Big 12 Relays.

The Cyclones (5-2) will close out the home portion of their schedule at 1 p.m. Saturday against Nebraska. The Huskers (4-5) are coming off of a close loss to the Kansas Jayhawks last weekend.

It will also be Senior Day for the Cyclones as Cassandra Nelson, Lauren Breunig and Chelsey Walden all compete in their last meet at Beyer Hall for Iowa State.

Swimming coach Duane Sorenson said the biggest thing that always comes with Senior Day is the emotions.

“Chelsey’s father swam here, so she is carrying on the tradition,” Sorenson said. “Lauren has had some just tremendous meets here at Beyer Hall, so there is a lot to go with that.

“Cassandra has done a great job for us this season, and I’m sure that she will be excited with it being her last meet.”

Breunig said it will be fun to see what the Cyclones can do against the Huskers in a dual meet.

“It will be exciting since we tied with them at the Big 12 Relays,” Breunig said. “A team win would be great.”

Sorenson said the Cyclones and Huskers both have their strengths and weaknesses, and the team that wants it the most will probably win.

“With it being our last home meet of the season, we’re hoping for a pretty top-notch performance out of our team,” Sorenson said. “Traditionally, though, Nebraska has just swam out of their minds at this meet.”

Last year, the Cyclones lost a hotly contested decision to the Huskers.

Diving coach Jeff Warrick said the divers, who are coming off of two strong performances in their last two meets, hope to keep fine-tuning things for the conference meet, which looms just two meets away.

“We just have things that we need to correct and do a little bit better job on,” Warrick said. “We’ll see how practice goes this week, though.”

The Cyclones will close out their regular season next week with a two-day meet against Kansas before moving on to the conference meet in February.
