Swimming and diving loses intrastate meet to Hawkeyes

It’s hard to win a meet when you start it slow.

The ISU swimming and diving team lost its first meet Friday 181.5-115.5 to the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Cyclones (5-1) struggled in the first seven events, winning only one of them.

By the time sophomore Haley Haynes and freshman Tien Tran got the Cyclones going with a one-two finish, respectively, in the 1-meter diving competition, it was too late. Haynes and Tran also finished one-two in the 3-meter competition, except Tran won the event, Haynes placed second and sophomore Kali Fryklund took the third spot in that event.

Senior Lauren Breunig won the 200-meter individual medley and the 100 and 200 freestyle for Iowa State as well. Other key performances included: sophomore Marni Benson’s victory in the 200 breaststroke and second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke, sophomore Lindsay Wegner’s second-place finishes in the 100 and 200 backstroke and senior Chelsey Walden’s placing second in the 500 and 1000 freestyle.

The Cyclones’ next competition is the Georgia Diving Invitational from Jan. 3 to 5.
