Koll finishes season with high hopes

After a season of continual improvement, sophomore Lisa Koll will finish her season at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Monday.

Koll has improved her placing in every meet this season, and although a top-10 finish doesn’t appear possible, she hopes to finish her season on a high note.

Coach Dick Lee said with the way Koll is running, a finish of anywhere from 35th to 70th is possible.

“A lot depends on what happens during the first 2,000 meters,” Lee said. “If she runs her race and feels good after that first 2K, I think she will be fine. If she over-extends herself in the first 2K, that could lead to a struggle at the end of the race.”

Koll said if she finishes in the same range that she has been competing in all year she will be happy.

“I just want to go compete with all of the people that I have been competing with all year,” Koll said.

Koll has finished in the top 10 in every meet this season.

Koll also said she is not really sure what her ideal finish place would be.

“Obviously, I have never been to nationals before,” Koll said. “I will look at some results and think of what I am capable of and set a goal.”

A concern for athletes who have never been to a meet like this is the big meet pressure getting to them. Lee said he does not see that happening with Koll.

“She is fit, ready to go and will compete well because she is a strong competitor,” Lee said. “She is confident in her own abilities and will be able to handle the pressure somehow.”

Lee said he does not think that the short nine-day layoff between regionals and nationals will affect Koll, although she has had at least two weeks in between each meet all season.

Koll qualified for this meet with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional last week in Minneapolis.
