Women’s team conquers Upper Iowa Peacocks in final exhibition tune-up

Playtime is over, and from here on out, it’s down to business.

The ISU women’s basketball team won its final exhibition game of the season Sunday, a 68-42 triumph over Upper Iowa.

Iowa State overcame a sluggish start against the Peacocks but bounced back in the second half, taking care of business in its final tune-up game of the season.

Iowa State especially struggled from beyond the arc, failing to hit a three until senior Megan Ronhovde buried one with just under 15 minutes left in the second half.

Ronhovde’s 3-pointer was in the midst of a 17-6 run that the Cyclones used to open the second half. The Cyclones outscored the Peacocks 43-19 in the second half.

“We need to learn, are we going to be the team in the first half or the team in the second half?” Fennelly said.

“We played totally different than we did in the first half.”

Iowa State took much better care of the ball than in its last game, giving up just nine turnovers, less than half of what it committed in its preseason opener against St. Cloud State.

Freshman Rachel Pierson played for the first time in almost a year after missing the entire 2005-06 season with a medical redshirt.

“She’s been through so much, but she’s big, she’s strong and she’s good around the basket,” Fennelly said.

“She tried too hard at times, but a lot of that was just trying to do something she didn’t need to do.”

So are they ready for their season opener?

Senior Lyndsey Medders thinks so, as long as the experimental three-point line is taken off the court, which it is.

“We’re ready,” she said. “That line will be removed, and the shots will go in. I promise.”

Fennelly said Heather Ezell is questionable for Wednesday’s season opener after being kicked in the head and needs to be evaluated by team doctors before a decision can be made.

The Cyclones open their regular season Wednesday against Cal State-Fullerton. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.
