The ISU soccer team won its second and third straight games over the weekend, beating Creighton and Northern Iowa, but the wins didn’t come without a fight.

Trailing 0-2 to the 0-5-0 Panthers, the Cyclones scored three unanswered goals to win 3-2 on Sunday at the Diadora Classic in Omaha, Neb.

“The tempo of the game was a lot different because there was standing water on the field,” said coach Rebecca Hornbacher. “We didn’t start out as well as we would have liked, but we came back attacking despite the weather conditions.”

The start of the turnaround came right before the half in the form of junior Brittanie Waddell’s penalty kick. The goal cut the lead to 2-1 heading into halftime.

The Cyclones came out of the half fast, and were awarded with their second penalty kick of the game. Senior Jess Villhauer then tied the game at 2-2 with her first goal of the season in the 55th minute.

Just 14 minutes later the Cyclones comeback culminated with a 22 yard strike from junior co-captain Stephanie Kaphingst, capping the Cyclones 3-2 come from behind win.

Sunday’s game wasn’t the only close call of the weekend. On Friday night, the Cyclones pulled out a close game beating Creighton 2-1.

The Bluejays tied the game at one apiece in the 54th minute, but Waddell answered back just 41 seconds later with a goal of her own giving the Cyclones a 2-1 lead. Freshman goalie Ann Gleason and the defense held on sending Creighton to 2-3-1 on the season.

After losing the first three games of the season, Iowa State has rebounded to win the next three to even its record at 3-3-0.

The Cyclones go for their fourth straight win against intrastate rival Iowa at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the ISU Soccer Complex. It is the first opportunity for the Cyclones to begin their quest for a repeat of last year’s win in the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk series.
