Ready to bounce back

The ISU women’s basketball team hopes history repeats itself on Saturday.

The last time Iowa State suffered a blowout loss, it bounced back to gain its first conference victory of the season.

On Saturday, the Cyclones (10-4, 1-2 Big 12) host Nebraska (10-4, 2-1), whose only Big 12 loss this season came Wednesday in a 64-58 defeat to No. 24 Missouri. The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak.

Iowa State’s last two losses were by a combined 50 points, with an 87-67 loss to Oklahoma and most recently, an 80-50 loss to Texas.

Junior guard Megan Ronhovde said she expects the Cyclones to bounce back again.

“That’s the mentality that we’re going in with right now,” she said. “We’re kind of sitting even right now. We gave one up at home, got one back on the road and lost on the road again last night.

“We need to get this one.”

Freshman guard Heather Ezell agreed.

“We need to regroup and come back home and get the win back,” Ezell said. “We have to come together as a team. We should be able to work hard and do what we have to do to get another win at home.”

Nebraska is led by junior Kiera Hardy, who averages 17.9 points per game.

“She’s a good player,” Ezell said. “It’s going to take not just one person, but two people playing on her to try and stop her.”

Iowa State has won eight straight games against Nebraska at Hilton, and has won three out of the last four contests. The Huskers snapped a three-game ISU winning streak last season in Lincoln.

Even as a freshman, Ezell leads the Big 12 in minutes played, something she said she definitely did not expect heading into this season.

“I never expected to come in and average the most minutes,” Ezell said. “I feel like it’s part of my job to do whatever I can do.”

Ronhovde appeared to find her shot against Texas, connecting on four of five 3-point attempts. She said she hopes to carry her scoring ways into the contest against Nebraska.

“It was great to have my shot falling,” Ronhovde said. “The outcome of the game isn’t how we wanted it to go, but we just have to regroup and get ready for Saturday.”

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday at Hilton Coliseum.
