Not enough (VB)

Even Hilton Magic wasn’t enough to help the ISU volleyball team.

Career nights from Katie Churm and Erin Boeve weren’t enough to prevent the Cyclones’ fourth straight loss, as No. 24 Kansas State bested Iowa State 3-2 (30-26, 27-30, 30-26, 24-30, 12-15).

It was Iowa State’s second straight five-game loss.

Churm set a new career high for digs in a match with 33, while Boeve’s 28 kills gave her a career high as well.

“I think Katie is maybe one of our most improved players from the beginning of the season,” coach Christy Johnson said.

“She was an average defender, and now I feel like she’s a great defender.”

Boeve’s kills were the most in a match by a Cyclone all season. Her six digs were also a career high.

“Boeve is just playing better and better,” Johnson said. “She’s becoming a go-to player, and that’s really exciting.”

The Cyclones appeared to have Kansas State on the ropes midway through game four, but weren’t able to hold on to the lead.

“That’s volleyball,” Johnson said. “It’s a game of momentum.”

The final game went back and forth, with the teams switching leads multiple times, but the Wildcats eventually pulled away, icing the game 15-12.

Kansas State has won 20 straight games over the Cyclones.

“Kansas State is a great team,” Boeve said. “There are just those few points that we need to take and get them on our side. We need to keep a team like that rattled.”

Despite two heartbreaking losses, the Cyclones feel confident they can bounce back.

“Now we’re putting ourselves in position to win these kind of games,” Johnson said. “The next step is finishing when we’re up.”

The Cyclones (13-12, 6-8 Big 12) took the first game, aided by Boeve’s eight kills. Iowa State put up a .452 hitting percentage, compared to Kansas State’s (16-7, 7-6) .320 in the game.

“It’s important for us to stay aggressive through the whole entire game,” Churm said. “I think some of us do a better job of that than others, and I think its just really important to keep together as a team.”

Kansas State rallied from a six-point deficit to tie the third game at 22, but Iowa State put enough effort together to close it out, 30-26.

The Cyclones and Wildcats posted similar numbers, as Iowa State hit .256 for the match, while Kansas State hit .245.

Kansas State was led by Sandy Werner, who had 22 kills, and Agata Rezende, with 21.

The schedule doesn’t get any easier for the Cyclones, who next host No. 1 Nebraska on Saturday at Hilton Coliseum.
