Volleyball squad gets another crack at No. 1 Nebraska

The last time the ISU volleyball team lost four straight matches, it upset then-No. 18 Texas in Hilton Coliseum.

Welcome, No. 1 Nebraska.

Iowa State has dropped four consecutive matches for the second time this season, falling to No. 10 Missouri, Colorado, Baylor and No. 24 Kansas State.

The last time Iowa State played Nebraska, the Cyclones fell in three straight games, nabbing just eight points in the first game.

“Last time against Nebraska, we came out a little intimidated, a little scared,” said coach Christy Johnson.

“This time we need to come out aggressive. Even just doing those little things, is a sign of a team that’s improving.”

The Cyclones (13-11, 6-7 Big 12) hit .029 in the match, with only Erin Boeve and Jessica Klein logging positive hitting percentages.

This time around, however, Iowa State hopes to be propelled by Boeve’s strong showing against Kansas State, where she logged a career high 33 kills and six digs.

The heavily favored Cornhuskers (22-0, 12-0) have yet to lose a match this season, and have recorded seven consecutive three-game sweeps.

“Nebraska is a great team,” Boeve said.

“We need to go in and just give it everything we have.”

Defensively, the Cyclones received another strong performance from Katie Churm, who logged a career high 33 digs against Kansas State.

Churm had seven digs against Nebraska the first time they matched up.

“We can compete with them better than they think we can,” Churm said. “If we go out and give them our best shot … we might catch them off guard.”

Nebraska hit .357 against the Cyclones last time and had three players in double figures in kills. Melissa Elmer (12), Sarah Pavan (13) and Jordan Larson (15).

Chris Houghtelling and Jennifer Saleaumua led the team in digs with 12.

Johnson said the Cyclones didn’t pass the ball well the first time around and will try to improve on that when they get their second shot at Nebraska.

Nebraska had 50 set assists to Iowa State’s 22.

“We want to play them a lot tougher than we did the last time,” Johnson said.

Churm said the team has learned a lot by taking its past two opponents to five games.

“Even though we’ve had tough losses, I think that we’ve learned, by going five games, that we can compete with any team in the Big 12,” she said.

First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum. Fans who bring a ticket stub from the Iowa State/Kansas State football game will receive free admission.
