Ending on a high note

The No.10 ISU women’s gymnastics team surrounded the floor exercise to cheer its lone senior, Abigail Richey, to a 9.825 in her final routine in Hilton Coliseum on Friday night.

The evening was a celebration of Richey’s career, and her teammates made sure she went out in style.

The Cyclones took charge of No. 19 Minnesota from the very beginning of the competition and did not finish until they had hit numerous season- and career-high performances, including the meet-winning and season-high team score of 197.00, demolishing the Gophers’ score of 194.75.

“We’ve been working really hard on the little things all year,” Richey said. “We all put it together for this meet.”

The Cyclones started with a solid 49.175 to take a 6.05 lead over the Gophers. Freshman Lindsey Murphy started the Cyclones off with a career-high 9.75 on vault, followed by a season-high 9.80 by sophomore Katie Lasher. Junior Laura-Kay Powell won the event with a 9.90, sophomore Janet Anson took second (9.875), and junior Erin Dethloff took third (9.85).

Coach K.J. Kindler said the team moved on to an exceptional team performance on uneven bars with some of the Cyclone’s best performances of the season. Anson matched her career-high 9.90 to take first on the event. Following in a second-place tie were Powell and Dethloff with 9.875. Bolstering the Cyclones’ score were career-high performances by junior Kacey Oiness (9.85) and sophomore Ashley Alden (9.825).

Kindler said the Cyclones’ best effort came on balance beam, where the team showed greater confidence than it has in the past several meets. Powell and Dethloff lead the field with a pair of season-high 9.90s to tie for first in the event. Anson also matched her season-high best 9.825 to take third.

The Cyclones finished off the sweep with a season-best team performance on floor (49.475). Dethloff’s season-high 9.95 put her in first place on the event, followed in second by Anson, who matched her season high (9.925). Powell took third with a season-best 9.90.

The string of season and career highs lead Dethloff and Powell to share the all-around title with a pair of season-best 49.575s. Anson finished the sweep with a 39.525.

The Cyclones finished undefeated at home for a second straight season and will lock in a strong seeding for the team in the postseason regional competition.

“[Our home winning streak] says, ‘This is our house and we don’t lose in our house,'” Dethloff said.

“The meet was like any good end point should be, especially for [Richey] and for the team going into Big 12s next week.”

The Cyclones finish the season 12-3 on the season and 3-1 in conference action.
