No. 10 Iowa State renews rivalry against winless Hawkeye squad

The No. 10 ISU women’s gymnastics team will take on three different teams Friday in Hilton Coliseum, but most eyes will be glued on one matchup alone — Iowa versus Iowa State.

“The Cyclone-Hawkeye rivalry is very prominent in this state,” said head coach K.J. Kindler.

“I know it’s very important to the athletes and the students.”

The schools’ gymnastics rivalry is a source of pride for both teams.

The Cyclones have won 21 of the past 22 meetings against Iowa, with the GymHawks claiming their last victory in 2003.

In the past two seasons, Iowa has burst onto the national scene by qualifying for the 2003 and 2004 NCAA National Championships, while the Cyclones last appeared at the championships in 2000.

Iowa natives Jessica Oney and Jade Kvach both agreed the meet holds some sentimental value, but the Cyclones will be focused on their overall performance.

“It’s just another team we have to beat,” Oney said. “There’s no more added pressure.”

Oney said the excitement of the competition will only help her to focus and bump up her level of competition.

Stepping up the team’s level of competition is exactly what Kindler said she expects her team to do.

“Our main focus is scoring a 196 [overall team total] or higher,” Kindler said. “We barely missed it last week, just by a sliver, so we’ll definitely have [196] in the forefront of our minds.”

To round out the four-team meet, two NCAA Division III squads will be on hand to spice up the competition.

Gustavus Adolphus College and Hamline University, both located in St. Peter, Minn., fielded squads that finished in the top eight at the National College Gymnastics Association Division III Championships last season.

Kindler said the quadrangular format is fairly uncommon but will be a great experience builder for this year’s conference, regional and national championship meets.

She said it gives the gymnasts an opportunity to learn how compete in a more chaotic and fast-paced environment, as all four teams will be competing at the same time and have a shorter amount of time to prepare when switching to the competition’s next event.

The competition also marks the seventh event in the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series.

Iowa leads the series 9-4, with two more points being put at stake this weekend.

The Cyclones are 2-1 (1-0) on the season, while the GymHawks have yet to pick up a win at 0-3.

The meet kicks off at 7 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.
