Stepping up on vault may help Cyclone gymnasts reach 197.000 mark

The sixth-ranked ISU women’s gymnastics team has proven one thing this season — it has what it takes to win.

Halfway through the season, the team is 6-0, has been ranked as high as fourth in the nation and has broken two school scoring records. But one thing the Cyclones have yet to achieve this season is the elusive 197.000 team scoring mark.

Though the Cyclones said they expect a win Saturday over No. 25 Minnesota, they hope the energetic competition arena will help spur the team’s performance over the 197 mark instead of holding them back.

Head coach K.J. Kindler said Minnesota has a strong tradition of bringing in large, dynamic crowds that make the Sports Pavilion an intense, competitive environment.

“However, I expect the girls to feed off of that energy,” she said.

Junior Susan Stock agreed.

“We need to just go out there with the same team dynamics, energy and great dancing to get the crowd going. [Even though it isn’t our home crowd], people still love to see a great floor routine.”

Senior Chee Chee Calina said it will be interesting to compare Iowa State’s showing in front of the Minnesota crowd this week with next week’s matchup against the same Golden Gophers at Hilton Coliseum.

“I think we’ve done well at Minnesota before, but I don’t expect anything less this time. Everyone has been having good practices this week,” Calina said.

Though the Cyclones are confident in a victory, they added they won’t be overly confident.

“Statistically, our averages are higher on every event,” Kindler said. “But, whenever you’re not on your home court, [the other team] has an advantage, and we’ll need to suck every tenth out of our performances. Last year, we only won there by one and a half tenths.”

Stock said the Cyclones don’t want to lower their standards since they’re facing a statistically inferior team.

“We’ve had OK meets lately, but not our best,” Stock said.

“We are still confident and want to go 24 for 24 on all our routines and still look for 197.000.”

Kindler said the vault team, which posted a school record last week in Illinois, will change its lineup this week. Calina will sit out to let a hyper-extended knee heal. Kindler said she expects the new lineup to perform comparably.

“In particular, we need to pull away on vault,” Kindler said. “That is where we definitely need to capitalize.”

Kindler said three gymnasts have stepped up this week to help the Cyclones remain dominant on vault. She said Krystal Carney, who posted a career-high 9.925 on the event last week, will return to the lineup, as will Stock, who did not compete last week due to the flu.

Kindler also said freshman Katie Lasher had a strong exhibition performance on the event last week and will round out the Cyclone lineup.

“These are three people we’re pretty excited about putting on that event,” Kindler said.

“[Minnesota is] always on their game at home; we won’t be able to miss a step while we’re there. I expect it to be a very challenging and good meet.”
