Volleyball finishes season with 3-0 loss to Texas A&M

The ISU volleyball team closed its 2003 season with a 3-0 loss to No. 24 Texas A&M Saturday in College Station, Texas. The Cyclones finished 12-19 and 4-16 in Big 12 play.

Iowa State was limited to 33 kills in the match, while collecting 40 digs and a hitting percentage of .093. The Aggies had 55 kills and a hitting percentage of .303.

“I thought that we did some things well in the match,” head coach Linda Crum said. “I really thought that in games 2 and 3 we did a really good job of blocking. Brittany [Dalager] did a nice job of running the offense.”

In the first game, Iowa State had 10 kills and hit .079 from the floor, while the Aggies hit a match-high .444 and had 19 kills and 3 errors. Texas A&M took the first game 30-15.

Game 2 saw the Aggies win 30-25. The Cyclones improved their performance with 10 kills.

In the third game, Iowa State had a match-high 13 kills and hit .111 from the floor.

But Texas A&M was solid offensively, hitting .283 and getting 20 kills with only seven errors to win 30-23 and sweep the match 3-0.

Overall, senior Renae Pruess led the Cyclones with a game-high 15 kills, and junior Brittany Dalager had 13 digs and 27 assists. Sophomore Ashlie McWee had four kills, two digs and two blocks. Freshmen Nicole Lorenzen and Katie Jessen, along with senior Michelle Gannon each had three kills. Senior Dana Koziol had seven digs to lead the defensive effort and junior Christine Smeele added five digs.

“I thought our seniors did a really nice job out there tonight,” Crum said.

“All three of them played really well. Renae [Pruess] had some nice kills for us. Dana [Koziol] played well defensively and Michelle [Gannon] came in and provided a spark when we needed one.

“I was really proud of our seniors tonight. They gave it their all and walked off the court tonight with no regrets in the effort they gave.”
