Opening night a success

“Shoot his legs. Shoot his legs.”

Bobby Douglas wasn’t hunting — the ISU wrestling coach was leading his team to two victories on the team’s opening night Friday.

After winning almost all of their matches in the season opener against Division II Minnesota State-Mankato, the Cyclone wrestlers took the mat against Boston University.

Iowa State won six of the ten matches in the dual on its way to a 22-14 victory.

The team found itself in an early hole when sophomore Nate Gallick lost at 141 pounds to Boston’s Joey Rivera, 8-5. Gallick fell behind early when Rivera took him down in the first period, but looked to be in control after taking the lead to open the third period. Gallick fell behind for good when Rivera scored a two-point takedown and a three-point near-fall.

Freshman Trent Paulson won his second match of the night at 149 pounds with a 14-2 major decision over Justin Blumenthal. The only thing Trent didn’t do was pin Blumenthal — though he came close in the third period when he earned three points for a near-fall.

Travis Paulson also started the season 2-0 by beating Zak Johns, Boston’s 157-pounder. Travis ended the match with a takedown and earned another point on an unusual “unnecessary roughness” call against Johns. Travis led the match in riding time and was awarded another point for a 7-2 victory.

Freshman Mike Somsky saw his first action of the season when he wrestled 17th-ranked Leighton Brady at 165. Somsky was out-muscled throughout most of the match and Brady won by technical fall, 25-8.

With Somsky’s loss, the Cyclones found themselves behind, 8-7.

Iowa State did not find any quick relief from 174-pound sophomore Kevin Amesquita, who gave up four late points and lost his second match of the night to Boston’s Ben Schillen, 11-5.

Freshman Kurt Backes had no trouble in his second match of the night at 184 pounds, beating Boston’s Tom Sforza 17-7. Backes”victory tied the meet score at 11. Junior Trevor Smith made his debut at 197 pounds, beating John DeCruz 9-7 to give the Cyclones the lead again.

Woodley Milord, listed at 197 pounds, wrestled Boston’s Courtney Howard at heavyweight. Milord was under-sized in his match and never lead during the 5-2 loss that tied the match at 14.

Sophomore Grant Nakamura was much too quick for Boston’s Britt Frimer and walked away with a 15-6 victory at 125 pounds. Nakamura scored early and often and never trailed, improving his record to 2-0 on the season.

Two-time all-American Zach Roberson then cruised to an easy 22-11 victory at the expense of Boston’s Mike Galarenzo. Roberson’s major decision gave the Cyclones the 22-14 victory.

The undefeated Cyclones are in action Friday in a double-header against Lehigh and Millersville in Bethlehem, Pa. The team’s next home meet is Dec. 7, against in-state rival Iowa.
