Montgomery and senior class to play their last home game Saturday

Saturday’s football game against Colorado will be one like none other for 28 Cyclone seniors — it’s the last at Jack Trice Stadium for the group that helped lead the Cyclones to three straight bowl games.

With the last two games of the year on the road against Kansas and Missouri, the senior’s season will not end this week. Home turf, home fans and everything else that factors into home field advantage will.

Bob Montgomery, the Cyclones’ anchor and leader on the offensive line, said he can’t explain how he will feel after Saturday’s game.

“[The advantage of playing at Jack Trice Stadium is] just the comfort of being home,” he said. “I don’t know if I can tell you what [the last game is] going to feel like. I don’t even know.”

The 6-foot-2, 300-plus pound lineman has rotated through the line and played both guard and center this season. When Luke Vander Sanden was injured, Montgomery was forced from guard to center because head coach Dan McCarney said he trusted Montgomery to get the job done.

Montgomery said his best football memory at Iowa State stems from the Cyclones’ 36-14 victory over Nebraska last season. Being from Lincoln, Neb., may have made the win even sweeter, but Montgomery said the game sticks in everyone’s mind.

Because of all the success the team has seen in the past few seasons, Montgomery said not winning is hard to deal with for the team. With a 2-7 record, he said the team needs to end strong.

“We need to get some W’s,” he said. “Just not tasting [victory] this year is killing us. You can see it in everybody, just how stressed everybody is.”

The Cyclones play three talented teams to end the season but McCarney and Montgomery both said fans shouldn’t count Iowa State out.

“We haven’t played like we can all year,” Montgomery said. “[Reaching potential] still hasn’t happened yet.”

Whether the Cyclones finish with wins or losses, 28 seniors will bid farewell to collegiate football.

“I was asking my dad about [being done at Iowa State] this week,” Montgomery said. “He was bringing it up and I got a little emotional.”

Although this year’s senior class will be gone, Montgomery said the team will have plenty of talent to be a good football team the next few seasons.

“There’s amazing hope for the future,” he said. “It’s just too bad we couldn’t do it this year. The more [the young players] play together, the better they’ll get.”

Kickoff for the home finale is slated for 1 p.m.
