Iowa State played host to Wisconsin in a 1-1 double overtime tie in rainy conditions Friday.

ISU head coach Rebecca Hornbacher was happy with the way her team battled Wisconsin.

“I’m very pleased with the effort our team put forth,” Hornbacher said. “We got significant contributions from many players.

“Wisconsin is a good team and will do great in the Big 10 and throughout the rest of the season. To play a ranked team like Wisconsin and come away with a tie is a dramatic improvement over last season.”

Sophomore forward Kristina Baumann put Iowa State on the board within the first 55 seconds of the contest. Assisted by Erin Weldon, the score was Baumann’s first goal of the season.

Wisconsin responded at the 33rd minute as Emily Kintzer put a kick past Cyclone senior goalkeeper Beth Chapman. In the first half, Wisconsin outshot Iowa State 8-3 and had a 4-0 advantage on corner kicks.

In the second half, the Badgers attacked the offensive zone, but Chapman and the Cyclones’ defense rose to the occasion to keep Wisconsin from scoring.

In the second half, Wisconsin had 14 shots on goal to Iowa State’s three.

Despite getting outshot in the game, Hornbacher said she liked how the Cyclones were creating scoring opportunities.

“The team as a whole played well. We were able to create a lot of chances,” Hornbacher said. “At the same time, we weathered the storm when Wisconsin had chances.

“The back line of our defense held together very well. It was a scrappy, physical game. The conditions didn’t take away from the quality of play.”

Neither team took a shot in the first overtime. Wisconsin had three shots in the double overtime while Iowa State had two. Chapman had seven saves in the game and Deb Benakis had a team-high four shots.

Hornbacher said she was pleased with the play of her goalkeeper.

“Beth Chapman played one of the best games I’ve seen her play,” Hornbacher said. “She made some great saves and was in the right place at the right time. She organized the defense well and was a leader vocally on the defensive end.”

The Cyclones played Michigan Sunday morning and fell 4-2 to the Wolverines. Michigan converted three times in the first half and outshot the Cyclones for the game 22-8. The Wolverines led 4-0 before the Cyclones got late goals from Jess Villhauer and Deb Benakis to close the scoring. It was Michigan’s first victory of the season.

Iowa State fell to 2-2-1 with the loss. The Cyclones’ next game is Friday against Illinois State in Normal, Ill.
