Over-40 game is ‘all about fun’

When playing in the Iowa Games, Dave Skogerboe says his Ames Hurricanes soccer team is there for one reason — to have fun.

“It’s all about fun,” he said. “When you’re 40 and over, that’s what it’s all about.”

Although they try to remain competitive, Skogerboe said the team likes to play together for the fun, rather than to win all the time.

Iowa State is well represented on the Hurricane’s team. Among the ISU members is Dean of Students Pete Englin.

When not playing at the Iowa Games, Skogerboe said the team plays in a Des Moines league during the fall, spring and summer. During the summer and the fall, he said the team gathers Wednesday nights to practice and play pick-up games.

Skogerboe said the team’s strategy is fairly simple. The 11 players on the field are organized in a 4—4—2 formation: Four defenders, four midfielders and two forwards, along with a goalkeeper.

“We keep the same guys playing defense,” he said. “They work well together. We keep our speed in the middle and in the front of the field.”

While on the attack, the Hurricanes usually work the ball down the side of the field. When in the offensive end, they cross the ball in front of the goal hoping to find a teammate to kick it into the net.

Skogerboe said the defense works to keep the ball out of the middle of the field to prevent easy shots on goal.

The Hurricanes started this weekend’s tournament on Friday night with a 2—0 loss to the Des Moines Celtics 40’s. Play continued Saturday with a high scoring, 5—4 loss to Urbandale. Saturday afternoon looked more promising, after a 3—1 victory over the Old Trolls, a team from Stuart, but the Ames team did not finish in the top three.
