ISU construction a never-ending project

Construction season seems to never end at Iowa State, and students need not look any further than their back door for proof.

During the summer, construction crews made changes across campus, from a new butterfly complex at Reiman Gardens to constructing a frame for the new Gerdin Business Building.

“There are always 50 to 60 projects ongoing,” said Dean McCormick, assistant director of construction services for facilities planning and management.

Some construction projects were completed before the summer session, such as the Jischke Honors Building, which is now open.

The Board of Regents approved the construction of an indoor athletic practice facility, which will be built over the artificial turf practice field west of Jack Trice Stadium. Construction on that project should start in December.

Here is the progress on some of the larger projects since May:

The Union Drive Suite Building 1 is now completed.

The Union Drive Community Center broke ground this summer, and is slated for a summer 2004 completion.

The Gerdin Business Building construction is on schedule, and is slated for a November 2003 completion.

The Hoover Hall skywalk over Bissell Road should be completed shortly, and the complex should be entirely finished in October 2003.

The Carver Co-Lab Building broke ground this summer, and is slated for a summer 2003 completion.

The Jack Trice Stadium scoreboard was completed this summer, as well as an expansion to the parking lot and a new seating area in the south end of the stadium.

The Extension 4-H Building on Stange Road broke ground two weeks ago.

The Reiman Gardens Conservatory’s new greenhouse space and butterfly gardens are slated for an October opening.

Several sidewalks and roads around campus will be intermittently closed this fall due to construction.

Bissell Road will be restricted to two lanes.

Knoll Road will be closed to traffic around the Gerdin Business Building.

Sidewalks near Hoover Hall and Howe Hall will be closed.

The sidewalk on the west side of Gilman Hall should reopen this week.
