Curtis, Kalabova honored

Not only are they skilled athletically, they also excel in the classroom.

Gina Curtis and Lenka Kalabova, who both won Big 12 outdoor track and field championships in 2002, have been named to the 2001-02 Verizon District VII Academic All-America team.

Curtis owns the indoor and outdoor school records in the high jump and is a three-time all-American. She was selected for the first team with a GPA of 3.78.

Kalabova, a senior in psychology, was named to the second team with a 3.74 GPA. She is one of the Cyclones’ top middle-distance runners, earning all-America honors with her sixth-place finish in the 800 meters at the 2002 NCAA Indoor Championships. She recently took the Big 12 outdoor 800-meter title.

By being named to the first team, Curtis will advance to the national ballot for national Academic all-America consideration.

ISU signs two top distance runners

The ISU men’s track team has gotten commitments from two top distance runners.

Fort Dodge native Dan Taylor took the 2001 Class 4A boys state prep cross country title. He recently competed successfully at the 2002 Drake Relays, winning the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters.

Kristjan Hunter was the runner up at both the 2001 and 2002 National Scholastic Indoor Championships in the mile, clocking 4:14 in 2002.

ISU head cross country and assistant track coach Corey Ihmels said he thinks both athletes should contribute right away next season.

“Both Kristjan and Dan also bring great academic prowess to ISU as well as being great athletes, which is important to the program as well,” Ihmels said. “They’re both excited about being Cyclones and having the opportunity to take our distance program back to the top of the Big 12.”
