Oh Power, where art thou?

It’s been over a month since Shane Power decided to leave Iowa State for another school. Little is known about where Power is headed or why he left Cyclone country.

He checked out New Mexico first. Then he reportedly went to Notre Dame and Mississippi State. He’s been to Pittsburgh and supposedly he was at the University of Virginia, too.

Sources say that Power is considering Wisconsin as well.

Not only do we not know what ZIP code he’ll be at next season, we don’t even know the time zone.

His former high school coach, Clint Swan, said last Friday that he hadn’t talked to Power for about a week, but assumes his decision will be announced soon.

Let’s hope so.

Until then, all we can do is wait. So why not reflect on some of the best moments of Power’s career here at Iowa State?

I admired Power for several reasons. He battled chronic back problems throughout his time here.

Nevertheless, former Iowa Staters were saying this guy was going to be the next Fred Hoiberg. How’s that for hype?

I’ll always remember Power because he was one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. He was always patient with reporters – even while struggling through a 12-19 season.

At press conferences, head coach Larry Eustachy would be the first to “take the stand.” You could see this man going gray by the second, especially during the Cyclones’ eight-game losing streak.

Who wouldn’t?

Shane Power, that’s who.

Gray hairs in that perfect ‘do – not a chance.

Even though Iowa State lost five of those games by a combined 12 points, Power always took the laid-back approach.

Sure, you could tell the losing part bothered him, and maybe that’s one of the reasons he left, but he realized it was part of a learning process.

I remember one instance nearing the end of the season when a reporter asked Jake Sullivan about the upcoming Big 12 Tournament. Sullivan said something to the effect of “We’ll probably face someone who’s beaten us already this year.”

Power, who was about five feet away, snorted and smirked as to say “No shit, everybody in the tournament’s beaten us!”

I was working on story about the upcoming home game against Texas and decided to ask Power what their approach would be against T.J. Ford – the lightning-quick Longhorn point guard.

Power shook his head and the expression on his face was priceless.

He gave me a look similar to those seen in the box-office hit “Dude, Where’s My Car?”

He told me that he and “beefcake [Clint] Varley” would probably go to Ford’s hotel room and “rough him up a little bit.” He added that (Andrew) Skoglund might join in.

Let me tell you, it takes a unique guy to come up with that when a reporter’s putting you on the spot.

Besides coach Eustachy, Power was the king of one-liners last season.

If I were Power, I would go to Virginia. They’re losing J.C. Mathis, so that opens up a scholarship. Roger Mason Jr. is still in the NBA draft, but has until June 19 to pull out. If Mason goes pro, the Cavs could use the help next season.

Best of all, Virginia plays in the same conference as Duke. I always root for the underdogs against Duke.

When they get together, it’s kind of the same situation as the Board of Regents vs. the students – and we all know who we want to win that battle.
