Out with the old, in with the… old.

The ISU men’s basketball team is losing sophomore Shane Power, but former assistant coach Steve Barnes will rejoin the Cyclones for next season, ISU head coach Larry Eustachy announced Monday.

Barnes spent the 1998-99 season as an assistant at Iowa State and the last three years as head coach at San Jose State, where his resignation was also announced Monday.

“Steve never got the credit he deserved for being such a key part of our success during the Jamaal Tinsley era,” Eustachy said in a press release. “He is the best all-around basketball person I have ever been around and he will be a big plus for this program.”

Barnes will take the position of associate head coach, formerly held by Bob Sundvold.

Sundvold will take over the administrative assistant duties that were left vacant with the resignation of Tres Chapman last month.

“It is a great opportunity for my family and me to work at Iowa State again,” Barnes said in a press release.

Barnes’ record at San Jose State was a combined 39-51, as he led the school to its first back-to-back .500 seasons since the mid-1980s.

This past season the Spartans were just 10-22, but they did end the Cyclones’ 39-game home winning streak back in November, 64-62 in the Tribune Cyclone Classic.

It was the second longest home-win streak in the country at that time.

Barnes and Eustachy have been colleagues since the mid-1970s when they were high school and college teammates, and they have coached together and against each other since.

“I am really excited about coming back to Ames and having the opportunity to work with coach Eustachy,” Barnes said. “I followed Iowa State closely while I was at San Jose State and I always stayed in touch with what was happening here in Ames.”

Barnes, a native of Arcadia, Calif., drastically improved recruiting at San Jose State, with his 2001 class ranked in the top 20 nationally by Clark Francis’ HoopScoop.

He also played a key role in the recruitment of Tinsley, who ended up being a first round NBA draft pick in 2001.

Barnes, 44, has 21 years of collegiate coaching experience, including 11 years coaching at the Division I level.

His final season at San Jose Sate was the only sub .500 season of his career.
