Fun for all ages: family, creativity and art

Remember that glass of Kool-Aid you knocked over as a kid, permanently staining your parents’ carpet?

Or maybe it was just last week when you spilled your coffee and unintentionally started a new fashion trend.

Now, thanks to the Brunnier Art Museum, you can spill, splat and sprinkle to your heart’s content.

From 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, the Brunnier is hosting family day. The event, “Explore the World of Natural Dyes,” gives families the chance to express their creativity using all natural dyes.

While this event targets families, especially elementary students, anyone can join in the fun.

“It always surprises me how actively adults participate in the craft activities,” says Allison Sheridan, University Museums education assistant. “You can walk by a table and see a father with glitter and feathers all over his hands or a mom helping her child with the scavenger hunt questions.”

A wide range of materials will be used, including red cabbage, onions, spices, parsley, coffee and tea.

Beginners need not worry: there will be a variety of projects to choose from.

“The skill level will range from intricate `weaving’ to simple knots,” Sheridan says.

Other projects will include making friendship bracelets out of hemp string and colored floss, and tie-dyeing coffee filters with washable markers.

A scavenger hunt with prizes will also take place.

“Family day is a great way to involve the community at Iowa State University through the art program,” says Rachel Hampton, information and collections manager.

This is one event where you can make a mess and not have to clean up.

“We will provide tarps and garbage bags to protect clothing and the art works,” Hampton explains.

Hampton also said education majors who need to observe children have used the event in the past. She adds this is a time to see children interacting with their family through art.

“I helped out when I was a college student at some of the past family day events and found it a rewarding experience partnering up with a child and assisting them with the activities,” said Sheridan.

“This is a great way for Iowa State students to artistically interact with local youth.”

University Museums has planned family events for more than 15 years.

The Brunnier is located on the second floor of the Scheman Building. The next family event will be the Spring Celebration on May 5, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Farm House Museum.
