Look for a variety of contrasts in 2002 hair styles

From highlights and layers to bobs and mullets, this year’s look for hair is full of variety.

“Haircuts are going to have a lot of contrasts,” said Doug Ziminski, artistic director for Leedz Salon, 2536 Lincoln Way,

Short layers will be mixed with long layers and long layers mixed with short layers, he says.

“No matter any haircut, we do layers,” said Stephanie Wood, stylist at Regis Salon at North Grand Mall. “We do a lot to give them texture and movement.”

A woman wanting a high contrast look might go for a tight bob with short bangs. To finish the look, the bangs could be colored with a solid, light color and the rest of the hair would be left dark.

For longer hair, a lighter color could be added to just the ends to create, “a purposeful splash of color,” Ziminski said.

Women will also be going for a “flirty” and “flippy” look. The “flip” will be personalized using razoring techniques and gouging techniques to break up the classic design, Ziminski said.

These techniques will give hair vertical movement and more overall feeling.

For men, the hair is getting longer and textured.

“A lot of men are letting their hair grow out,” Wood said.

Mullets are coming back, such as the one Brad Pitt wore in the movie “Snatch.” There will be a strong contrast of shorter out-of-place hair with longer hair, Ziminski said.

The biggest accessory for hair right now is color.

Blond, in particular, “is the most requested hair color in the salon,” Ziminski said.

Women are going for a tan or carmel blond color in the winter and an ash blond or an acidy yellow color for the summer.

Highlights are also falling under the “high contrast” image to be on the look out for in 2002.

Ziminski said more solid colors are being mixed on top of lighter colors today.

“Natural [hair color] is not in,” Ziminski said. “It’s more personal and expressive.”
