Cyclones topple Northern Iowa

Kyle Moss

The ISU men’s basketball team outscored the University of

Northern Iowa 25-6 in the final six minutes of Saturday’s game,

leading the Cyclones

to a 88-69 win over their cross-state rivals Saturday night in Hilton

Coliseum.

The Panthers tied the game with 6:30 left to play after back-to-

back

three-point baskets from senior Erik Smith. But the Cyclones

pulled

away by

executing and hustling well in the final six minutes, according to

head

coach Larry Eustachy.

“This was a nice win for us, I thought we beat a very good team,”

Eustachy

said. “A team that wanted to beat us, a team that’s full of seniors.”

Iowa State, now 7-6, was led by sophomore Jake Sullivan who

had

career-high

26 points on eight-of-14 shooting and three-of-five from behind the

three-point stripe. Senior Tyray Pearson added 17 points and eight

rebounds

despite being plagued with foul trouble.

Sophomore Marcus Jefferson scored 15 and sophomore Shane

Power

finished

strong with 12 points, three blocked shots and two steals..

“I really told Jake and Shane they have got to be more aggressive

on

offense, they’re not getting enough shots,” Eustachy said. “I

thought

Jake

was really aggressive offensively. Shane needs to get more than

eight

shots.”

Iowa State outscored UNI 36-26 in the paint and came up with five

steals in

the game. Junior Omar Bynum contributed 12 points and eight

rebounds

off the

bench..

The Cyclones also shot 53 percent for the game, 55 percent from

beyond

the

arc and 90 percent at the free-throw line.

“They shot the ball with a lot of confidence,” UNI head coach Greg

McDermott said. “We didn’t make our free throws.

Northern Iowa, which was led by sophomore David Gruber with

23 points,

shot

just 63 percent at the line and 47 percent from the field.

The Panthers, now 6-4 on the season, defeated the Iowa

Hawkeyes

earlier

this year, making this intrastate victory that much more sweet for

Iowa

State.

“We won this game with a bunch of sophomores and a bunch of

freshman,”

Eustachy said.

Iowa State faces Morris Brown on Dec. 31 at home before kicking

off

the Big

12 Conference season at Baylor on Jan. 5.
