Loverly musical to make Stephens dance all night

Just you wait for “My Fair Lady” to come to town.

“When we choose musicals to come to Ames, we look at the familiarity of the title,” says Patty Cotter, performing arts programming manager for the Iowa State Center. “`My Fair Lady’ was one that will make the audience come away humming the songs.”

Songs such as “Just you Wait [Mr. Higgins]”, “Wouldn’t it be Loverly” and “I Could’ve Danced All Night” will keep the audience’s feet dancing long after you see the show, Cotter says.

The story was based on a Greek myth and co-written by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe.

“It is a timeless story that has crossed hundreds of years,” she says. “It is an interesting idea with the idea of what makes a woman a lady.”

Cotter adds that the inside-versus-outside substance of the story provokes thoughts on looks versus character.

“I find the idea of transformation of characters very interesting,” she says.

The plot begins as Eliza Doolittle becomes a bet between Professor Henry Higgins and his friend Colonel Pickering, says Travis Fritsche, company manager for the show.

Professor Higgins sees the incomprehensible Cockney accent of Eliza, and bets he can pass her off as a duchess after six months of working with her.

“[Higgins] takes a flower girl off the streets in the year 1912 and turns her into a princess,” Fritsche says.

“The characters are pretty fun,” Cotter says. “I watched the movie last year with my family for the first time, and the classic, warmhearted story appealed to everyone.”

Fritsche said that every show has been well attended and well liked.

“The audiences are just wonderful,” he says. “It is a great experience for both the cast members and the [audience].”

The shows have been a mixture of both adults and children, Fritsche says.

“Parents are able to introduce their children to musical theater,” Cotter says. “The whole idea of something coming alive on stage definitely appeals to a younger crowd.”

“It is a wonderful evening of entertainment,” Fritsche says. “It provides escape, relaxation and happiness.”
