Homecoming gives opportunity to alumni

Current and past ISU students will be “Living the Cyclone Moment” as they celebrate Iowa State’s 2001 Homecoming.

Many activities will be geared toward the current student body, but one group of ISU students have been preparing since last spring for the arrival of hundreds of Iowa State alumni from generations past.

The Homecoming Central’s Alumni Events Committee has been working for the past year on events that excite alumni and bring back memories of Iowa State.

The golf outing on Sunday was bigger and better this year with the addition of a breakfast and more participation by the alumni, said Bret Pierce, alumni events coordinator for Homecoming Central.

Homecoming is a good opportunity for alumni to come back and remember their alma mater, said Pierce, junior in agricultural business.

“A lot of successful people have left this campus and [Homecoming] is good for them to come back and see were it all began,” he said.

Alumni will get the chance to see the creativity of ISU students in their lawn displays, banners and storefront window decorations done in cardinal and gold.

Former ISU students also will get an earful when they watch the final rounds of Yell Like Hell, Pierce said.

Also on Saturday, alumni will have good food and conversation at the annual alumni tailgate, Pierce said.

“They have a good time coming back to the tailgate,” Pierce said. “A lot of connections are made and kept.”

Homecoming Central is part of the Student Alumni Leadership Council and receives a large part of its money from the ISU Alumni Association, said JoAnn Ford, co-chair for Homecoming Central. It is important to stay in contact with them, she said.

“We use alumni a lot, and they love to hear from us and see what is going on at Iowa State,” said Ford, junior in psychology. “They are the ones that continue to support the university.”
