The ISU men’s track and field will be making an addition to its team in the fall of 2001.

Matt Murdoch, the 2000 Canadian Junior Champion and 2000 North American Junior Champion, recently signed a national letter of intent to join Iowa State.

The Ontario native holds records in the javelin, shot put and discus, bringing him recognition as team MVP all four years at Frontenac Secondary School in Canada.

After being contacted by more than four dozen colleges and universities in the United States, Murdoch chose Iowa State. His decision came from Iowa State’s strong interest and friendly environment.

“We’re excited about Matt’s prospect of being in the top three in the Big 12 and in the top 10 nationally [in the javelin],” O’Mara said in a press release. “Matt’s first throw of this year would rank him eighth in the country. We won’t have to do a whole lot of manipulation with his technique, just make him faster and more explosive.”

Murdoch was one of six nominees for the Kingston Athlete of the Year, falling second only to the 2000 Olympic Triathlon Champion Simon Whitfield.
