ISU baseball earns split with Winona State

Iowa State finally built some confidence in its second game against Winona State Wednesday. After a week of significant turmoil, the Cyclones shut out the Warriors, 9-0, at Cap Timm Field.

Iowa State handed Winona State its fourth loss of the year. The Cyclones lost the first game, 3-0.

The Cyclones had lost their final game against Iowa in Iowa City Tuesday, 8-1, in a rivalry that had lasted over 100 years.

Iowa State generated six runs in the first two innings as T.J. Bohn hit an RBI single to center field, which scored Spencer Allen, who had walked, to give the Cyclones their first run of the game.

In the next at-bat, Joe Urban singled to score Bohn and Rob Conway, who had his only hit of the game in the first inning.

Iowa State (10-15-1) continued their pummeling of the Warriors in the next inning when Allen drove in two runs off of the first of Winona State’s (12-4) two errors by Travis Zick.

Bohn then struck again as he doubled to score Allen and had his final hit and RBI, scoring Allen, in the fourth inning.

Bohn went 3 for 4 from the plate in the game. Urban went 2 for 3.

The performances came in light of the Athletic Department’s announcement Monday that the baseball program would be discontinued after this season.

“We needed a win really bad just to lighten up the mood around here,” Bohn said. “We needed to get over the hump. It’s been a bad week. We were hurting.

“Our confidence was real low. We just [have] more attitude now. I just felt I was being aggressive, hitting the ball hard and in the holes.”

Michael Wilcox put some cushion on the board when he had his only hit in the fifth inning, scoring Brandon Cashman and Ryan Wickham.

“The last two days it has been difficult for the kids to put [on] the uniform and not be caught up in all the emotion and all the hoopla,” ISU head coach Lyle Smith said. “That’s out of our control. What’s in our control is how we play and how we conduct ourselves.

“After what the kids have been through the past two days … I was pleased that they got it together and played better in the second game. I didn’t think that team beat us the first game.

“We beat ourselves by our lack of offensive production. There’s a lot of frustration that we have somehow have got to [work on] and focus on what we’ve got to do because that is negative energy. We want to generate positive energy.”

Alex Donnelly improved to 3-0 with the win on the mound in the seven-inning game. Winona State’s Troy Heifort fell to 1-2.

Iowa State will return to Big 12 action when it plays Texas Tech in a three-game weekend series in Lubbock, Texas beginning Friday.

Their next game at Cap Timm Field is Tuesday when they host Grand View at 3 p.m.
