The ISU volleyball team wrapped up its season playing the University of Baylor in its home finale before traveling to the University of Texas Tech in the season finale.

The Cyclones put up a tough fight in game one against the Baylor Bears. Both teams battled back and forth to control the lead before Iowa State gained a 13-12 edge. Moments after, Baylor went on to win the game 15-13. Baylor defeated Iowa State in scores of 15-13, 15-4 and 15-9.

“We played a good match against Baylor,” said head coach Linda Grensing. “We played very competitively against them, but they were prepared for us.”

Baylor was led by Freshmen of the Year and all-conference candidate Stevie Nicholas. Nicholas posted her 16th double-double of the season, while Tatiana Kenon concluded with a season high of 14 digs. Nicholas, who leads the Big 12 and is also ranked 6th nationally in kills per game, recorded a team high 12 kills and collected 11 digs.

“Stevie’s a great player,” Grensing said. “She was the focus player that we set out to shut down. We did that in our first match against Baylor. I think she had a debt to repay since we set her on the bench; in doing that it said a lot about the team that we are.”

Stacy Nicks led the Cyclones with seven digs and eight blocks, while making only two hitting errors on 24 attacks to give her a hitting percentage of .458.

Nanette Allen also contributed with a strong performance. Allen collected a team high nine digs and five kills, which brought her season total to 188.

“They both [Nicks and Allen] had a good match and demonstrated a lot of leadership. They go out and have a strong presence on the court and also show a lot of confidence in the team,” Grensing said.

Sarah Rollman tallied 11 kills for the Cyclones along with seven digs. Rollman is the only ISU player to surpass the 200 mark in both kills (210) and digs (207) for the season.

“Sarah over the last six weeks has improved, and her statistics show who she’s becoming,” Grensing said. “She’ll step into the leadership roll for us next year with the loss of Nicks and Allen.”

The Cyclones concluded their season Saturday with an 0-3 loss to Texas Tech.

Rollman once again led the Cyclones with a team high seven kills and four digs. Julie Mitchell ended the night with five kills and three hitting errors on 18 attacks.

Nicks finished second on the squad with six kills and one block assist. She finished her senior season with 256 kills bringing her career total to 776. She will also go into the record books as one of the better blockers to ever compete at Iowa State.

Nicks tallies 111 blocks this year, including 31 solo stops for a per-game average of 1.17.

Nicks is ranked fifth at Iowa State in all time block assists as she recorded 265 block assists on her career as a Cyclone.

Nicks is also ranked seventh on the ISU career solo block chart with 82.

“There was a lot of emotion with their last game,” Grensing said, “when they focus on Stacy [Nicks] and [Nanette Allen] it opens up for Julie [Mitchell] and Sarah [Rollman] to step up.”

Iowa State finished out the 2000 season with an overall record of 2-27 and 0-20 in Big 12 action.
