Huskers sweep ISU volleyball

Nebraska wasn’t looking for the ISU volleyball to be a threat in clinching their Big 12 conference championship but the Cyclones put up a strong effort in Lincoln Wednesday.

The Cyclones fell to Nebraska 15-5, 15-11, 15-1 Wednesday night at Nebraska Coliseum. The 11 points scored by the Cyclones in the second game where the most points Iowa State has scored when playing in Nebraska over the past six years.

Iowa State’s two large contributors for the night were Nanette Allen and Sarah Rollman. Allen tallied a team high 11 kills while Rollman contributed with a respectable seven kills, six digs, and a hitting percentage of .267.

Renae Pruess led the Cyclone offensive with 24 assists while on the other end Allen and Rollmen provided the defensive balance for the Cyclones. The two ended the night with 7 digs each.

The victory for the Huskers was a team effort. Three of the Huskers that helped lead the school to victory were setter, Greichaly Cepero; middleblocker, Amber Holmquist; and outside hitter, Laura Pilakowski.

The three combined for 30 kills and a hitting percentage of .440. Holmquist pounded a match high 11 kills on a .389 hitting percentage, and tied for a match-high in blocks with 4. Cepero recorded her 9th double-double of the season with 31 assists, and 10 kills on an impressive .533 hitting percentage.

Pilakowski had a solid showing on the night as she tallied 7 blocks, and 9 kills on a .412 hitting percentage.

The bench proved to be a strong asset to the team also. Jenny Kropp came off the bench to add 6 kills along with a hitting percentage of .750. Defensively for the Huskers, Angie Oxley recorded 8 digs. Following closely behind Oxley was Polakowski with 7 digs.

Wednesday night’s win for the Huskers was their 17th continuous victory, a total no other Big 12 team has been able to accomplish, and Nebraska still has three matches remaining in the Big 12.

The Huskers also clinched the school’s first Big 12 conference championship.

The Huskers end regular season play with an overall record of 25-0 and a Big 12 record of 17-0.

With the loss, the Cyclones move to an overall record of 2-25 and 0-18 in Big 12 play.

With only two games left to play in regular season, the Cyclones return home to face Baylor Monday at 7 p.m. in their home finale.
