Andy Stensrud makes transition to offensive lineman

Andy Stensrud spent his first three years at Iowa State serving a supplementary role at tight end.

This year, the senior moved a spot down the line to right tackle and now has earned a starting position.

The 6 foot-7 inch, 280-pound Stensrud hails from Lake Mills, where he starred on the basketball court as well.

The Iowa State Daily recently sat down with Stensrud to ask him about the looming Kansas State game, and how his season is going thus far.

Iowa State Daily: “How has your role changed this year?”

Andy Stensrud: “I’m starting now. I’ve started all of the games so far. Last year — I don’t know if you would call me a role guy — I came in on certain situations, and I was the second team tight end. You know, it’s been good for me, moving up to being a No. 1 starter and all that.”

ISD: “Were you asked to be moved?”

AS: “I was getting sick of being second-string, and Coach McCarney and Coach Woodley just mentioned it, and it was something that I thought I could probably do, and I could start there.

“It’s kind of both. They brought it up, and I also started thinking a lot about it.”

ISD: “What does the offensive line need to do this week for the Cyclones to be successful?”

AS: “We need to be real physical. That should be our No. 1 priority. Kansas State — they like to stop the run, they like to put eight and nine guys in the box.

“We need to be knocking people off the ball for 60 minutes. And we need to protect Sage [Rosenfels] when he throws the ball. They have an excellent defense. We just need to keep our heads and be physical.”

ISD: “Are you guys going to go with more of a passing attack this week?”

AS: “You now, I can’t say. Looking back over the past game, we’ve been pretty balanced. We get into trouble when we aren’t balanced.”

ISD: “This game last year was labeled as the debacle, what were a few things that went wrong with last year’s game?”

AS: “Oh boy, at halftime we were real surprised that we were up on Kansas State. They were picked to win the national title and all this. We were just kind of shocked like we shouldn’t be in that position.

“We went out and fell apart in the second half. And the rest of the season. It just wasn’t the same after that.”

ISD: “Has last year’s game played a role in motivation for this year? Is it all still in the back of everybody minds?”

AS: “I don’t think so. I don’t think too many people think about it. The big rag on us this season is that we haven’t beat anybody. I’m not going to say anything, but this is our shot to do that.”
