Letter to the editor: Communist bus ride

Shawn Faurote

I read the Oct. 10 article in the Daily about the proposal for “free bussing” with dismay that GSB was considering a proposal that would increase student fees by $12.70 in order to fund the project. There is a significant sector of the ISU population that use the bus service on a daily basis, and they currently pay for the service they use in the form of a bus pass.

Figuring at least 2 trips to and from on the bus per day during a five day school or business week the cost over a semester per trip is only about 30 cents per trip for a $49 pass.

At the same time there are a good number of people that rarely, if ever ride the bus. If they decided to ride the “free bus,” 6 times during the semester, that works out to be $2.12 per ride for the “free bus,” while under the current system they would pay only $2.10 for all 6 trips.

This proposal is foolish communism. There is currently a system in place that better meets the needs of the individual student, rather than the proposal that treats all people with the same regard whether they will have use for the bus service or not.

A policy that treats all as equal regardless of use, need, desire or want – the joys of communism, just too sweet.
