Intramurals in full swing

Intramural sports are starting up again with 50 events to participate in for the 2000-2001 school year. Garry Greenlee, one of the intramural coordinators for Iowa State, expects about 200 floors and Greek houses to participate along with faculty and staff members. Each floor and house has an intramural manager. These managers are a key asset to participation. They are in charge of informing members of their floor or house, and, with so many sports being offered, promoting participation is important. ” “They are our link to over 26,000 students,” Greenlee said. “They do a great job, and we need them to keep doing a great job.” The floor and house managers motivate students to join intramural sports. Kim Irons, sophomore in nutritional science-F.C.S., is a co-manager with her roommate for Harwood House in Lyon Hall. “It’s a fun position. You get to let people know about intramurals and help pull teams together,” Irons said. She uses exercise as motivation for her floor. “It’s a good way to get a workout so you don’t gain that freshman 15,” she said. “Plus, if you win, you get a T-shirt.” Her house has already won intramural champion T-shirts in ultimate frisbee this semester. “Our floor is really active in intramurals. We are competitive and like to be active,” Irons said. Her co-ed house participates in nearly every sport. “It’s a team builder for our floor,” she said. It also allows students to continue competing after participating in sports in high school, she said. Something new added to intramurals this year is the requirement of a photo ID and a current fee card in order to participate. Students, faculty, staff, affiliates and spouses can participate. Affiliates include members of the Iowa State Center faculty, ISU Alumni Association and the ISU Foundation. The new rule has been added to cut back on illegal players. Ames High School residents, siblings of current ISU members, past graduates, and members of other colleges have all been caught in the past. “The main reason why we’re requiring identification is to avoid this problem,” Greenlee said. An ineligible player will cause the entire team to be dropped. Good sportsmanship is also an important part of intramurals. Each team is ranked on sportsmanship on an A, B, or C level. If a C rating is awarded, the team will get a letter explaining something went wrong at the event. But Greenlee said C ratings usually are not given out if the team is trying to work out the problem themselves. “We want teams to play hard. We want them to compete. But there”s also a place for sportsmanship, and that’s why you get your team ratings,” Greenlee said. “That’s why we award T-shirts for sportsmanship.” Information and entry forms are located at the Recreation Services office in 2220 State Gym.
