The ISU hockey team entertained fans at the Ames Ice Arena on Sunday playing their annual intrasquad game. The game featured plenty of scoring as the Cardinal team blitzed the Gold, 9-1. Freshman Mark Krueger was the star of the game, scoring four goals and handing out two assists. Junior Glenn Detulleo was also effective on the scoreboard with two goals and four assists. The first line of Krueger, Detulleo, and Nat Little all had two or more assists. “They dominated the whole game,” said assistant varsity coach Brian Preston, who coached the Cardinal team. “They play well together.” Gold goalie Ramyleo Abujobarah did very well to fend off a flurry of shots by the opposing team less than a minute into the contest. The game’s first goal came courtesy of Chris Leyen only four and a half minutes in. Abujobarah had one of the best plays of the first period, making a sprawling save on his back just over eight minutes into the game. The Cardinal team got back on track when Krueger scored his first goal of the day with about six and a half minutes to go. He would go on to score two more times in the second period, both coming about 90 seconds apart. Detulleo began the second period by scoring with less than a minute off of the clock. The period also saw the Gold team score their only goal, thanks to the efforts of freshman Loren Benner. The physical game continued into the third period, causing a delay when a glass panel behind the Cardinal goal popped out of its slot. The game was stopped for about five minutes while arena workers set the panel back into place. After that, the Cardinal team continued their outstanding offense play, receiving goals from Detulleo, Krueger, Tory Larson, and Phil Kaylor, who scored with six seconds left to end the deluge of goals. On the whole, the coaches were impressed with the play of the team. “Overall, it was a very balanced game,” said junior varsity head coach Rick Hahn, who led the Gold team during the game. “There’s a lot of talent this year.” Fans were impressed with how the team played during the intersquad match. “It’s good to see them playing again,” said Rick Leatherman, a Marshalltown resident who follows the team and the sport. “It seems they’re playing hard and are more aggressive.” “With a lot of these players coming back, I think we’ll have a pretty good team,” said Amanda Hibbs, a senior in sports management. As for individuals to watch out for, Krueger’s name was the topic of discussion. “He’s going to be a big asset for this team,” said Leatherman. One other expectation that the fans are waiting for this season is the opening of the new ice arena, under construction now and slated to open in February. “The new arena will be pretty nice,” said Jen Fouts, hockey cheer squad coach. “It should be 100 percent better.” “It will be pretty interesting for the season ticket holders to see the change to the new arena,” said Emily Little, senior in architecture. The game even drew in fans from quite a distance away. “It’s a fast paced sport,” said Frank Biskner, who came to Ames from Inverness, IL to see his son Eric play in his first game for the Cyclones. Biskner got on the scoreboard, assisting on Benner’s goal for the Gold team. The Cyclones play an exhibition series with the North Metro Owls Friday and Saturday in the Ames Ice Arena. Action starts at 7:30 p.m. on both nights.
