New Irish Pub opens tonight in Campustown

There’s a new bar on the block, and this time it’s a chain. Mickey’s Irish Pub, located at 109 Welch Ave., is the third in a series of Mickey’s in the Midwest. The bar’s grand opening is tonight and will feature KCCQ broadcasting live, free t-shirts for the first 105 people through door and drink specials. “We’ll have $3.50 domestic pitchers, $2.50 long islands and free Minsky’s pizza,” said Steve McFadden, Mickey’s manager. “Minsky’s from Nevada has leased the lower level and they’ll serve pizzas. We’ll have waitresses upstairs, they’ll deliver pizzas upstairs. So it’s like a full restaurant that goes heavy into the bar at night.” After starting up the first two Mickey’s, including one in Urbandale and one in Lincoln, Neb., management decided Ames was the next best place to open a new location. “Geographics, close to our other location and we like the built-in market – college,” McFadden said. “We have one in Lincoln, same concept.” But with Ames already filled with bars, and even having an Irish bar in Paddys, McFadden and company are taking a pretty confident approach. “We’re a a nice place, clean, real authentic Irish pub and good drink specials,” McFadden said. The location, which used to be home to Pancheros Mexican Grill, went through an extensive makeover according to McFadden with 60 straight days of a crew working inside and out of the establishment. “Everything in here is new, new floors, new walls,” McFadden said. “All the antiques are real antiques.” As far as entertainment goes, Mickey’s won’t have games or anything, but the bar is planning a weekly music showcase. “Every Wednesday we’ll do live music,” McFadden said. “We’ll have Irish music, we’ll have top 40 house music and local bands.” There will also be a patio in the back that will be fully covered. McFadden said they are planning to put a pool table out there in the fall. “It’s going to be all enclosed so it will be operational all year round,” McFadden said. “We talked about doing a ’70s night, a disco night. We kind of have a dance floor area and we’re thinking about doing something with it.” Mickey’s will be offering weekly drink specials every Monday through Thursday, leaving Friday and Saturday nights with normal prices and no cover. Monday nights will consist of anything for $2, meaning everything from pitchers and long island iced teas to shots. Tuesday nights is two for the price of one on anything. “Wednesday night is ladies night. Ladies get to drink free,” McFadden said. “Plus $2.50 Red Bulls and live bands.” Thursdays will feature $3.50 domestic pitchers and $2.50 long islands until 11 p.m.
