Intramurals ready for action

Once again this semester, Garry Greenlee and Linda Marticke have worked hard and prepared yet another great year for intramural sports. Each year the intramural department plans out the school year with fun and exciting activities for the student body to compete in. “It takes a lot of attention to details, organization and hours,” said Greenlee. “We decided to cut a couple of sports and try out some new ones this year.” Intramural sports are very popular with the student body here at Iowa State. The large numbers of participants seem to contradict with the number of staff members. Only three staff members run the department, two are busy running the actual sports, while the third talks with the supervisors and referee’s. “Every year we expect large numbers of participants and every year we get those large numbers,” Greenlee said. One of the best ways to get involved and get information about the different activities is through the Resident Hall Intramural Associate or through the Greek System. “Each week new fliers are posted around campus with all of the information,” said Greenlee. “Intramurals are a great way to meet new people, relieve stress and bring back the thrill of playing in competitive sports again,” said Greenlee. “With our different skill levels it’s really easy to get involved.” The skill levels range from A, which is very competitive, to D, which is more recreational and low skilled. After the team is formed, they decide which skill level they wish to participate at. All skill levels are very popular at Iowa State. “There’s a high number of teams that show up playing sport after sport after sport,” Greenlee explains. “And when you see students walking around wearing their Intramural Championship shirts you can tell that they enjoy playing. Everyone likes to play competitive sports and what we offer is a way to compete on different skill levels so everyone has a chance to win.” Every year Iowa State’s most popular intramural sports is Broomball. In Broomball, a team of six people play a recreational version of ice hockey. It is played on ice without skates using broom-like sticks to hit a soccer ball into a goal. “Broomball is always a top program here,” said Greenlee. “It’s a tradition playing Broomball at Iowa State around mid-night or one o’clock in the morning.” Last year the intramural department recorded having around 300 Broomball teams at different skill levels. “Broomball is played here on Iowa State’s Hockey Ring,” Greenlee said. “We also have three outdoor recreation areas, RCA, Towers and the southeast intramural field.” “We just play all over,” said Greenlee. “Intramurals are for the fun of it,” adds Greenlee. The intramural season starts with George Knaphus 2-Pitch Softball open to men, women, and co-recreation. Entries open on August 14, close on August 24 and are due at 2220 State Gym.
