Cyclone baseball wraps up with one big win

The ISU baseball team wrapped up the regular season by stealing one of three games with No. 24 ranked Big 12 rival Oklahoma.

The Cyclones erased a 12-11 defeat on Friday by outslugging the Oklahoma Sooners by the same 12-11 score on Saturday afternoon.

The Sooner defense put four errors on the board that helped Iowa State win, despite five home runs by the Oklahoma batters, which also tallied 18 hits.

Oklahoma led 6-2 in the fifth inning, but the Cyclone offense racked up seven runs in the fifth inning, against Oklahoma starter Austin Mix.

The big blow was a two-run homer by Ryan Wickham, which also scored Ben Van Iderstine.

Steve Goldberg drove in a run to make the score 6-5 before the ‘Clones were aided by the Sooner defensive miscues.

An errant throw by catcher Josh Withcher scored Cyclone Rob Conway.

Then with the bases loaded, Van Iderstine came up to bat again. The senior came through with a two-RBI single. A bad throw by shortstop Tommy Whiteman allowed a third run, and the Cyclones were up 9-6.

Three solo homeruns by Oklahoma batters Whiteman, Rick Park and Sean Murphy off Cyclone starter Mike Laesch quickly tied the game at nine apiece in the sixth.

Cyclone pitching then put a stop to the Sooner offense, while the ‘Clones put three more runs on the board in the seventh, thanks to two more Sooner errors.

With two runners on base, a Van Iderstine grounder was botched by Sooner third baseman Jason Bartlett.

With the bases loaded, a Ryan Wickham fly ball was misplayed and dropped by outfielder Jeff Bajenaru, which allowed three more unearned runs to score.

The Cyclones didn’t relinquish the lead, although the Sooners scored two runs in the ninth off pitcher Ben McKay.

Charly Bigwood entered the game to preserve the win, notching his third save of the year.

The Cyclones improved their record to 19-36 overall and 7-22 in the Big 12.

Oklahoma fell to 36-19 and 19-10 in league play.

ISU head coach Lyle Smith said his team was able to bounce back due to the other team’s mistakes.

“Errors happen and we took advantage of those today,” he said.

The Cyclones were unable to end the year with a winning streak, thanks in part to the efforts of Sooner reserve catcher Chris Haggard on Sunday.

Haggard, who entered the game with only one homer, smacked three solo shots off of Cyclone starter Brian Curtin.

Iowa State pulled within one run in the fourth inning on a two-RBI double by Joe Urban, and then in the sixth inning Rob Conway smacked his 10th homer of the year to pull the Cyclones within one again, 4-3.

Haggard’s final homer in the seventh gave the Sooners a 5-3 cushion and pitcher Jeff Bajenaru collected his 18th save of the season.

Curtin got the loss to finish the season at 1-8. He pitched seven innings, upping his season total to 100 innings, the most ever by a cyclone pitcher.

Oklahoma’s Logan Cueller improved his record to 3-1.

Oklahoma ended season play with a 20-10 record, and went 37-19 overall on the year.

The Cyclones were 19-37 overall, and 7-23 in the Big 12.

Seniors Aaron Runk, Jade O’Brien and Ben Van Iderstine all hit safely in their final game.
